The former first lady's favorite jogging spot, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir in the heart of the city features a 2.5 km (1.6 mi) jogging track and bridle path around its perimeter. The reservoir was formerly used to a water source for the city, originally completed in 1862. In 1993 it was decommissioned, and now serves as a scenic place for a leisurely stroll or jog. The reservoir supports a number of waterbirds, including Canadian geese, loons, ducks, herons, and coots, making the site popular among birdwatchers. The park is also known for its delicate pink cherry trees that blossom in spring and its rhododendron garden.
