The former first lady's favorite jogging spot, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir in the heart of the city features a 2.5 km (1.6 mi) jogging track and bridle path around its perimeter. The reservoir was formerly used to a water source for the city, originally completed in 1862. In 1993 it was decommissioned, and now serves as a scenic place for a leisurely stroll or jog. The reservoir supports a number of waterbirds, including Canadian geese, loons, ducks, herons, and coots, making the site popular among birdwatchers.
