The Manhattan Bridge is a suspension bridge that crosses the East River in New York City, connecting Lower Manhattan at Canal Street with Downtown Brooklyn at the Flatbush Avenue Extension. The main span is 1,480 ft (451 m) long, with the suspension cables being 3,224 ft (983 m) long. The bridge's total length is 6,855 ft (2,089 m). It is one of four toll-free vehicular bridges connecting Manhattan Island to Long Island; the nearby Brooklyn Bridge is just slightly further downtown, while the Queensboro and Williamsburg bridges are to the north. Our New York City trip itinerary planner makes visiting Manhattan Bridge and other New York City attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.
The bridge was designed by Leon Moisseiff, built by The Phoenix Bridge Company, and opened to traffic on December 31, 1909. An innovative design, it was the first suspension bridge to employ Josef Melan's deflection theory for deck stiffening, resulting in the first use of a lightly-webbed weight-saving Warren truss for its construction. Considered the forerunner of modern suspension bridges, it served as the model for many of the record-breaking spans built in the first half of the twentieth century.

There's nothing much close by the Brooklyn side, but the subway is only about 2 blocks from the entrance. This is not a very attractive bridge, but the views of the Brooklyn Bridge and state of... more »
Walking the lesser known Manhattan Bridge is a cool thing to do. It's worth it for the views of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan skyline. Its a huge bridge so expect to walk over a mile (one... more »
Has a great view of Brooklyn Bridge but as others mention - walking alongside the train it is incredibly loud. If that doesn't bother you or you (like me) are determined to get some photos of the neighboring historic bridge just go for it ! And take the journey back to Manhattan via the Brooklyn Bridge.
Not a lot of people take the time to walk across Manhattan Bridge, choosing the more picturesque Brooklyn bridge as their subject, but try this on for size: Cross from Chinatown to Dumbo on Manhattan, then return on Brooklyn, making a (long) circle route onto the island! I fell more people need to appreciate this gorgeous blue bridge. My only suggestion is BRING EARPLUGS. With all the train traffic crossing on the same level as the pedestrian pathway, the rumbling is DEAFENING. By the end of my crossing, I was feeling a migraine coming on. Earplugs would have definitely remedied this.
