The Bells Up Story: “If you’re this successful in a career that makes you sick, stressed and miserable… how much more successful would you be doing something you love?”

That’s the question Sara asked Dave eight years ago, following his mental and physical breakdown from more than a decade as a successful corporate tax attorney. This, while watching Sara’s professional mentor battle pancreatic cancer at age 40.

The answer, for us, was that life is too short to spend unhappy. So we turned the basement hobby that brought Dave joy — winemaking — into Bells Up Winery.

Dave left the legal field, dedicating himself full-time to learning the business of making wine as a professional at Henke Winery while we lived in Cincinnati, Ohio.

After Dave won two different amateur national winemaking competitions with two different wines, we decided to relocate to Newberg, Oregon. In 2013, we established Bells Up Winery and our winemaking dreams took root.

Today — micro-boutique, un-domaine and always open by appointment — Bells Up composes handcrafted, classically-styled Oregon Pinot Noir with grapes sourced primarily from micro-growers located on the northern side of the Willamette Valley.

"Bells Up" is a reference to a dramatic moment in classical music where the composer instructs French horn players to lift the bells of their instruments upward and project their sound with maximum intensity. Specter, a French horn player who performed in bands and symphonic groups throughout high school and college, feels the winery is his “Bells Up” moment.

  • Bell’s Up Winery literally helped me survive the pandemic. I visited the winery right before the world went into lock down. Dave and Sara are awesome, genuine, great people. I had ordered 3 cases not knowing how much we would need it to survive. It was delivered to my front door with no problems. The wine is superb. I highly recommend visiting the winery if you can but if you can’t order the wine on line. You will not be disappointed.
  • I highly recommend the wine tasting at Bells Up. It is a very unique experience because the wine maker, Dave, is the person guiding you through the tasting. Who better to provide insight about the wine than the person who has put their blood, sweat and tears into making the wine? I had such a great time and would rate this among my top wine tasting experiences. The combination of the hospitality and finely crafted wines is a knockout! I can’t wait to share Bells Up wines with my family and friends. Thanks again for the wonderful visit.
