The Breakers was once the lavish summer home of the powerful Vanderbilt family. Today, the well-maintained property is a National Historic Landmark. You can wander through the two main floors and the kitchen wing of this 70-room, Italian Renaissance-style building. Admire the opulent furnishings and grand architecture designed by Richard Morris Hunt, one of America's most influential architects. Pick up an audio guide for more information about the mansion and the life of America's mega rich at the turn of the 20th century. Be sure to stroll through the grounds and take in the ocean views. If you are in Newport, you have to hit up at least one of these opulent estates. And if you’re only going to hit up one, you should probably make it this one. Incredible example of what a lovely summer cottage for the ultra rich looked like back when a summer cottage meant a massive mansion on the coast. Definitely stroll down the cliff walk, and while you’re at it, make your way through the back streets in this neighborhood and marvel at the rest of the private residences as well.

Boggles the mind how beautiful this mansion is. We had to strap the babies to us, wearing them as no strollers are permitted inside. The grounds are beautiful and you can use a stroller on them. It's right along the water with beautiful views. Staff was very knowledgeable and could answer questions. There is a nice little gift shop that sells shot glasses amongst other things.
