Trip Planner:   USA  /  Rhode Island  /  Newport  /  The Breakers

The Breakers, Newport

4.8
The Breakers was once the lavish summer home of the powerful Vanderbilt family. Today, the well-maintained property is a National Historic Landmark. You can wander through the two main floors and the kitchen wing of this 70-room, Italian Renaissance-style building. Admire the opulent furnishings and grand architecture designed by Richard Morris Hunt, one of America's most influential architects. Pick up an audio guide for more information about the mansion and the life of America's mega rich at the turn of the 20th century. Be sure to stroll through the grounds and take in the ocean views. • One of the most beautiful mansions ever! Take your time browsing with the headphones and just enjoy the view and the decor.  more »

  • We took our younger children on the Cliff Walk, which is free. It was very hot, but clear. My son, who is 5,want to climb down the cliff to the ocean, but luckily most of the Cliff Walk has a barrier wall which made that difficult for him. There lots of people! This is not something to do if you are looking for a quiet relaxing walk. We stopped at the breakers and used the facilities there. Then we ate our picnic on the grounds, which were stunning! There was a little cafe to eat at. But we found a nice shady bench in the garden. You can purchase tickets to tour inside the mansion, but our littlest one was not up for that. However he was able to run all around the gigantic lawn at the back to the fence at the cliff. We will take the kids back when they are older and do the inside your. But the outside your was amazing too.
  • Very beautiful and impressive home. They have a very well organized audio tour. They even divide it into an audio tour for the adults and one fo the kids. I chose to listen to the kid version. It was narrated by the house itself and how it saw its prior tenants, the Vanderbilt’s. The kids really liked it and so did we. The house is in great shape and it’s full of history. Great family fun.
  • I love the Breakers! This is my favorite mansion to visit in Newport. It is beautiful! I love the audio tour and the options during the tour to listen to additional information. If you are here during the summer, look into the Newport Music Festival. I have attended 3 evening concerts at the Breakers and they were all fabulous!
  • Beautiful mansion! If you are visiting near Newport, I would recommend going to this place. This place has audio tours that have many different translations for different languages. In the mansion, if you are in a room, I would take a panorama to capture everything around you. On the outside, you can see the sea and the green lawn in front of you. I am definitely coming here a second time!
  • Impressive building by Vanderbilt, especially in the old days they can build such enormous building using granite and marble. The location itself is pretty impressive with a beautiful view. There are many tours to choose from (the Breakers, Marble House and etc). Parking is free. If you want to go to the Cliff Walk, just go around the side of the Breakers and you can see other massive mansions.
