Mayslake Hall was built between 1919 and 1921 as the retirement home for Francis Stuyvesant Peabody, one of the nation’s largest coal producers. The mansion's architect, Benjamin H. Marshall, was acclaimed for his historical revival designs and for establishing an unmatched standard of excellence for Chicago’s most elegant apartment buildings and hotels, including the Drake, Blackstone, and Edgewater Beach.
The house is an outstanding example of Tudor Revival architecture and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It stands as a rare surviving example of the magnificent country houses built in DuPage County during the period known as the American Gilded Age (1880-1920)
Today, the estate is one of the education centers of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. It is home to theatre and music performances, educational programs for all ages, lectures, tours, and a variety of special events. Mayslake Hall is also undergoing historic restoration with the ultimate goal of reviving its original grand condition. Docent-guided restoration in progress tours are available every Wednesday and Saturday morning throughout most of the year. Call 630-206-9566 for more details.
The surrounding Mayslake Forest Preserve encompasses 87 acres, including trails that meander past lakes and wetlands and through sections of restored prairie and a rare white oak savannah. The preserve also feetures a 4 acre off-leash dog park. Standing opposite of Mayslake Hall is the Portiuncula chapel, which is a replica of the Chapel of St. Francis of Assisi in Italy. Besides serving as another point of architectural interest, the chapel hosts a variety of weddings, baptisms, memorial services, and other events throughout the year.
Mayslake Peabody Estate Reviews
Attended my son's wedding at the chapel on property this last March. Small but excellent venue for parties under 60. The rest of the estate was like walking through a life-size clue game - many of the... more »

We had our wedding ceremony and reception at Mayslake Peabody Estate on August 11, 2019, and everything was absolutely PERFECT in every way! I had called a number of different venues when we were first deciding where to have the wedding. In my first conversation with Sherry Brookes, the Public Program Coordinator, I knew that Mayslake was the place for us! Sherry is very professional, organized, and friendly, and she made all of the planning stages easy and fun. She was always accessible and flexible in working with us. The list of vendors that Sherry gave us was very helpful in selecting a caterer for our reception, and we really appreciated Sherry’s expertise and helpful suggestions based on past weddings that had been held at Mayslake. We were initially planning to have an outdoor wedding, but several weeks before the ceremony, we decided to move the wedding inside. That was not a problem for Sherry and the Mayslake staff, and we even got a refund because the charge for an indoor wedding is less! Sherry made sure to be at the rehearsal so that every detail of the wedding and reception could be reviewed. The Mayslake staff graciously accommodated all of our requests and treated us like royalty! On the day of the wedding, everything was PERFECT! Many of our guests commented on what a beautiful and unique venue we had chosen. We had about 65 guests, and it felt like we had the mansion and grounds all to ourself! The library was beautiful for our wedding ceremony and for dancing during the reception. And the table set-up in the adjoining living room and dining room was lovely and intimate for the buffet meal. The lovely grounds outside provided many photo opportunities for us and for our guests. Our guests also enjoyed looking at the paintings in the art exhibit that was there. In addition to being a wonderful venue inside and out, the cost for Mayslake was cheaper than the other venues I called, and we had use of the venue for a longer time! My husband and I are so happy the we chose Mayslake Peabody Estate for our special day, and we highly recommend it for any event you may be planning!
We didn't see the estate itself which is only open on certain days. The grounds were nicely kept but not much more than a lawn with trees at the edges. I'm planning to come back to see the house and the chapel exterior is quite beautiful. Otherwise there's not a lot to see here.
