Create an itinerary including Lake Merritt
Ride a gondola on the only fresh and saltwater lake in the middle of the city when you visit Lake Merritt. This 62 hectare (155 acre) tidal lagoon provides the centerpiece for joggers and walkers as well as those who want to rent a kayak, sailboat, canoe, or rowboat to take out on the water. You'll also discover a nearby garden and children's amusement park here. Explore the nature center and learn about artificial islands that serve as bird refuges on the lake and the birds that flock there. You'll find bars and restaurants nearby. Check the website for live music concerts or other events that are often held on the shores of the lake. • Everyone loves to walk around the Lake and there is so much to see here, landscaping, water, good architecture. And lots of places to have a picnic. Much loved by locals. Be careful of possible...

  • I am drawn to the water no matter where I have lived. The lake and surrounding free use areas adjacent to the lake are wonderful, exciting, informative and down right essential to my "Ness". I meditate often at the Bandstand, walk leisurely thru the botanical gardens, ride my bike pleasantly along the sidewalk on the lakeshore and so much more. I love Oakland so much.
  • There is a lot of great wildlife. Beautifully restored. The gem of Oakland. Highly recommended!
