#4 of 24 in Parks in Omaha
Gene Leahy Mall, also known locally as Central Park or The Mall, is a 9.6acre park located at 1302 Farnam on the Mall in Downtown Omaha, Nebraska, U.S.A., and bordered by South 10th Street. The Mall is encircled by a long pathway that wraps around a large lagoon. There are also waterfalls, two huge slides, a horseshoe pit, and an amphitheater where outdoor concerts are held in the summer. The mall is decorated with thousands of lights during the winter holiday season. Connected on its eastern edge with the Heartland of America Park, it is also borders the W. Dale Clark Library, the former Burlington Headquarters Building, the Old Market and the ConAgra campus.
Originally conceived in the 1970s, the Gene Leahy Mall was named after Omaha Mayor Eugene A. Leahy, and is regarded as being a major impetus for the redevelopment of downtown into a thriving commercial, residential and cultural center in Omaha. In 2005 a major redevelopment process began focused on redesigning The Mall and several areas surrounding the Old Market.

  • When I went, before the renovations ( was back in 2016 - 2017) it was a very nice little park with walking trails around the pond and people would have their lunches there (those who worked downtown)....  more »

  • Another highlight in the Omaha tourist book of recommendations. This is not to be mistaken for a literal mall of shops and stuff. This is a really cute outdoor park area with unique "art work." Cool and functional art park benches throughout the park. I believe there are 10, but I only found a couple because of limited time. My favorite would be the mega giant slide. For a better "wheeee" experience, consider sitting on a jacket or something that doesn't cause friction. I was just wearing jeans but kept getting stuck in the middle of the slide. Yes, I'm a big kid and went on the slide a couple of times! There's a small bridge that gives you a great view of downtown Omaha. Since this was in mid-December, the water beneath the bridge was slightly frozen. I bet coming during the fall would be beautiful with all the leaves changing colors. All the trees were bare when I visited.
  • It's being totally destroyed under the guise of" progress". The mall WAS a uniquely different all season place. The fancily dressed strolled through after an evening @ the theatre. Mother took children down for a little run-around time on a hot summer evening Outing without a price tag. Enclosed just enough to keep our children safe; yet somewhat free to roam. And the shade of the "now missing trees, was a bonus
