Lake of the Clouds is a lake located in Ontonagon County in the Upper Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan within the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. The lake is situated in a valley between two ridges in the Porcupine Mountains. Surrounded by virgin wilderness and stunning vistas, the lake is a popular destination for hikers, campers, and fishermen.Planning Ontonagon trip won't be overwhelming when you use Inspirock's itinerary maker.
The lake is a prominent feature of the park, and can be viewed at the Lake of the Clouds Overlook at the west terminus of former Michigan highway M-107. The state park occasionally hosts a nighttime sky watch at the lake. The lake is fed from the east end by the Carp River Inlet and the outflow from the western end is the Carp River, which empties into Lake Superior on the boundary between Ontonagon and Gogebic County.

If you want a really good view, this is a must. You can see so much from this point. I really recommend coming here during the fall, so you can see the foliage. But it’s good during anytime. Except... more »

Incredibly beautiful any season, but particularly good in the fall with the colors. The parking is a short (but steep) walk away and the path is paved. Hiking trails extend in either direction from the main viewing area, some with very nice wooden decking. This is a must stop location for anyone passing through the area. Other attractions in the area for those wanting to make a trip out of it including the porcupine mountain wilderness area as well as the lake Superior shoreline.

I was in complete awe when I first saw this place. It was breathtaking! By far the best thing to see in Porcupine Mountains. There are a ton of hiking trails through Porcupine Mountains but The Escarpment Trail is the best choice if you want amazing views and scenery of the Lake. I loved it so much I hiked it twice and even got to see a bear! I would strongly recommend buying a Bear Bell at one of the gift shops before hiking any trails as Black Bears are common in that area.
