The park is jointly managed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation and the National Park Service as a part of the Redwood National and State Parks. These parks (which includes Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, and Redwood National Park) have been collectively designated as a World Heritage Site and form part of the California Coast Ranges International Biosphere Reserve.
The meadow along the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway, with its population of Roosevelt elk, is considered a centerpiece of the park, located near the information center and campground. These open areas of grassland within the redwood forest are locally known as prairies; and the park takes its name from Prairie Creek flowing near the western edge of the meadow and along the west side of the parkway. Other popular sites in the park are Fern Canyon and Gold Bluffs Beach. The park is also home to the tailed frog and several species of salmon.

Prairie Creek is basically in the center of Redwood State and National Parks, and if you can only visit one of these parks, this is the one. The Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway is a beautiful drive... more »
There were elk! :) And gorgeous views of the redwood forest. Nice hikes. Everything was well marked and easy to find. Very well maintained. Glad I visited! more »
Did the James Irvine Trail out to Fern Canyon starting from the visitor center. Very scenic and secluded after the first few miles. Found 3 banana slugs on the trail and Pacific coast wrens and hummingbirds once the elevation increased. The Fern Canyon is definitely worth going to, but you can access from another road if you can't do the long hike there. Fern Canyon is a little more popular but just astounding. Trickling water sounds and great place to cool off splashing in the creek
One of my favorite parks! Volunteers who work here are informed and welcoming. The visitors center is truly excellent with the gorgeous prairie stretched right out. Hikes are great here, moderately difficult but long. Fern Canyon and Gold Bluffs are their crown jewels and definitely worth the visit.
