#6 of 11 in Nature in Page
One of the world's largest natural bridges, Rainbow Bridge National Monument spans 71 m (234 ft) in the isolated foothills of Navajo Mountain. Though known for centuries by Native Americans who held the bridge scared, and sighted by trappers, prospectors, and cowboys in the 1800s, the existence of this massive sandstone bridge was not made public knowledge until 1909. To reach it, take a boat trip on Lake Powell, followed by a 1.6 km (1 mi) hike from the dock that crosses rugged terrain. Both the bridge and the trail are on Navajo tribal lands, and the National Park Service asks visitors to be respectful of this. It is not illegal to approach or walk under the arch, but the Park Service requests that you stay in the viewing area. • A must see if you are at Lake Powell. Make sure you have your water bottle with you!! The walk has a half way point stop and the shaded benches provide some relief from the sun. Some of the walk is slight uphill and some slight downhill. Nothing is too strenuous poor steep. You need to walk all the way up to the plaques behind the bridge. What a stunning view. Great photo opportunities!
  • Took a 50 mile boat trip from one end of Lake Powell to the other. Cruised at about 30-39 miles per hour. We rented our boat from B &T Marina great rental place. They provided the map and details about the lake. The walk at the time we got to Rainbow arch took about 20 minutes. The park service has bathroom and a nice dock and pathway. Largest bridge this side of the Mississippi.
