Lehigh Gorge State Park, Pennsylvania

#96 of 151 in Nature in Pennsylvania
Lehigh Gorge State Park is a Pennsylvania state park in Luzerne and Carbon Counties, Pennsylvania in the United States. The park encompasses the Lehigh Gorge, which stretches along the Lehigh River from a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flood control dam in Luzerne County to Jim Thorpe in Carbon County. The primary recreational activity at Lehigh Gorge State Park is white water rafting.
There are three primary access areas for the park. The northern access point is at White Haven, just off exit 273 of Interstate 80 on Pennsylvania Route 940. This is the important northern entrance into the river cut gully or gap between highlands, and was an important barge loading transshipment point on the newly extended upper Lehigh Canal fed initially by a shortline railroad from the Mountain Top yard dating from the 1837 enabling legislation set up to join the Lehigh and Susquehanna Valleys via Mountain Top and the Ashley Planes incline railway.

  • Lehigh Gorge is a wonderful place for hiking with your dog(s). If seeking a peaceful leisurely hike, take the railroad grade trail. It is wide and well-groomed with deciduous trees; hemlock, pine, spruce, mountain laurel, native rhododendron, ferns... interspersed with beautiful waterfalls on one side and the river on the other. It's an easy climb down to the river where you can swim or rest on any of the many boulders deposited along the edge as if awaiting your arrival. It's beautiful.
  • Great place for year round adventure! The bike trails are nice, and their is plenty of hiking and picnicking available. Good introductory whitewater in the warmer months! As a whitewater guide that has rafted all over the country, the Lehigh is a great little run of relatively easy whitewater. My wife and I rafted the White Haven to Rockport section for the first time in January of 2019 when it was 20°F outside. What an adventure! Please do not attempt such an excursion without proper training and equipment, but if you've got it, it was a blast. I highly recommend rafting in the summer with a local guide service. The river must be respected! Get outside! Use your local, state, and national parks! They are there for YOU to enjoy, and for YOU to respect so that all can enjoy them for generations to come. This a great one!
