First acquired in 1977, Big Lagoon State Park is a 705acre Florida State Park located on the northwestern Florida coast, approximately 10mi southwest of Pensacola on Gulf Beach Highway. It encompasses the northern boundary of Big Lagoon as it snakes toward Pensacola Bay to the east. Wild Grande Lagoon and its minor tributaries lay within the boundaries of the park, as does the alligator-inhabited Long Pond, a man-made freshwater pond.
The park is a 'gateway site' for the Great Florida Birding Trail. It features nine distinct natural communities including estuarine tidal marsh, mesic flatwoods, wet flatwoods, and is dominated by scrubby flatwoods. The park features a number of threatened and endangered species such as the large-leaved jointweed, gopher tortoise, migratory shorebirds such as snowy plover, least tern among some twenty other listed species.
From Big Lagoon, the Florida Park Service manages two neighboring state parks - Perdido Key State Park to the southwest and Tarkiln Bayou Preserve State Park to the north.
The park has such amenities as beaches along the shoreline of Big Lagoon, bicycling down the 2.6mi park drive, boating from a boat ramp on the Intracoastal Waterway, canoeing along Big Lagoon, fishing, hiking along 4mi of trails, kayaking in Grande Lagoon, wildlife viewing from a four story observation tower and footbridge overlooks at Long Pond and Grande Lagoon, picnicking at 17 shelters, swimming in Big Lagoon and 75 electrified camping sites and a group camp.

Big Lagoon State Park Reviews
This was a really nice park staff was great. The camping spots were nice and private and bath houses were clean and very nice. Really close to the Naval base if you are going to museum or lighthouse. more »
some of the camping spaces were a little tight but everything was chill. Go to the observation deck for awesome views. Took a break from the water due to jellies. Lot of wildlife and birds. Great for.... more »
We really enjoyed it. I gave 4 star because there were only warnings for alligators which is good. But we didn't see gators but we did see 2 cottonmouths. We are from rural Mississippi so we are used to always keeping an eye out and knowing what to do when you see one. But if you want to get a feel for what this part of Florida once was before hotels and fancy restaurants go here you wont be let down!!
A nice camp ground but no sewer hook ups! Some camp sites are concrete but most are not. We were in campsite 14, the site was a soft sand. Hard to level a camper, sank and broke my Jack stand. The park ranger at the entrance/check in station was not friendly nor welcoming at all. He was never accommodating during our whole stay. The park host was another story. Mike and his wife were friendly and gracious. They made sure our stay was comfortable. The bathrooms and shower stalls were always clean and well supplied. All in all a great and pleasant experience. Our favorite activities while there were birdwatching, trail hiking and had the most fun kayaking and paddleboarding and watching the sunrise from the observation tower.
