#7 of 65 in Historic Sites in Philadelphia
Church · Hidden Gem · Historic Site
"The Nation's Church" also known as Christ Church was the first Protestant Episcopal church in the U.S. This National Historic Landmark was founded in 1695, but the construction of this structure didn't begin until 1727. The church's steeple was built in 1754 and, at 60 m (197 ft) high, was actually the tallest building on the continent at the time. Take in the structure's famous colonial craftsmanship and 18th-century architecture. Step inside the church, which hosted 15 signers of the Declaration of Independence in its congregation, among other historical figures. • Caught the end of a service here while we were in Philadelphia (we didn't realize the change to summer hours). Very welcoming place with a lot of history. Well worth a visit either to attend a service or for a tour.
  • Centuries old but well maintained church which is still active year round with passionate leaders and traditional organ music. Neighborhood house (Building beside the church) is church office where you can meet church clergy men & women who work from 8:30 am to 5 PM. Too many visitors due to church's rich history and If you are visiting during visitors hours then sorry you cannot have quite or have a moment of prayer as tourists guides inside the church speak bit loud. Among locals this place is known as ... The church of the American president's !
