Its centerpiece spire is visible from downtown Tucson, a distance of 45 miles (72 km). The summit rises to 3,374 feet (1,028 m) above mean sea level. Though appearing to be the remnant of a volcanic neck, it is now believed to be a tilted and eroded piece of rock overlain by a lava flow.

  • Needed a break from our ride up north and decided to stop at the park. To our delight, it was a perfect place to stop, have our picnic lunch, and stretch our legs a bit. There are several shelters.....  more »
  • Enjoyed a two hour hike up and back on the Calloway Trail. Wear good hiking shoes and a stick is helpful with the climb and loose gravel watch your step. Nice park, but the picnic tables are all...  more »
  • Wonderful place to stop for lunch or a driving break along 1-10! $7 gets you a nice variety of shaded picnic tables and some fun very short hikes (we did Children's Cove) that will help burn off energy, see lots of kinds of cacti, and enjoy the amazing views that come with a little elevation. The ranger was kind and helpful and the bathrooms were super clean.
  • So I’ve been living in Tucson for 4 years now. On various occasions I travel to Phoenix for one thing or another and on my way I would always pass Picacho Peak. It looked very mesmerizing every time and kept telling myself I should pay a visit. I finally decided to go once and for all and boy I wasn’t disappointed. There are various trails you can choose from depending on difficulty. I decided to take the long trail up spontaneously. I made it about 3/4 of the way before I decided to turn back because I didn’t feel prepared to make it the rest of the way. I will probably return well-equipped next time with plenty of fluids and some food, gloves, first aid kit etc. just to be on the safe side. It’s recommended because it’s a tough trail actually and it’s not for everybody. The scenery is magnificent for sure and I love the abundance of the teddy bear chollas which is one of my favourite cacti. I will definitely return again. 👍☺️✌️
