Home to more than 4,000 animals, Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium and its 31 hectares (77 acres) represents one of Pennsylvania's most extensive wildlife parks. As one of just a few zoo-aquarium combinations in the country, the facility offers a variety of both aquatic and land-based species, more than 470 in total. You can explore the zoo's themed areas, including the Asian Forest, African Savanna, African Ravine, and the Water's Edge, and view residents in lushly constructed natural habitats. In the aquarium, you'll find several species of penguins, including king and macaroni. Check the zoo's online schedule for information about zookeeper talks, feeding days, family events, and festivities held on-site. Very nice zoo. Clean, organized, great exhibits. Went on a fantastic weather day; animals were very active and seemed happy. The minimal interaction with staff was very positive.

This is a great place to go with family. I especially enjoyed the elephants, although I am sure they regularly change their exhibits. If you go, plan on bringing extra money for drinks and food. A bottle of Aquafina was $5.35. You could also opt to bring your own water and snacks, but make sure you follow the rules. Today when we checked into the gate, we didn't have anyone check our bags. But always follow the rules they have on their site. It took us about 3 hours to walk briskly around the Zoo. If you want to take your time, I'd give it 5 hours and plan on eating. For those with walking troubles, you can rent a scooter in advance or rent a wheel chair. There are lots of hills to plan for, so make sure you have a good pusher for the chair. It is a wooded area, but sunscreen is still a good thing to have. Most of all, have fun! Hope this helps.

It’s a great zoo! I love the hiking option instead of the escalator. I do wish the animal exhibits were a bit bigger and they would focus on more education around our oceans. Otherwise, they have a great amount of programs and special events that I love to attend and I’m a member of the zoo. There’s always something happening there! I like that they have selections of craft beer and they’re starting to have more food from around the world. It would be nice if 1-2 nights a week they opened later and closed later like 11-7 in the summer months, but I understand that probably throws the animals off their feeding schedules. Photos are from multiple trips.
