Mine Creek Civil War Battlefield State Historic Site, Pleasanton

4.1
On October 25, 1864, on the banks of Mine Creek, two Union brigades of approximately 2,500 troops defeated approximately 7,000 Confederates from General Sterling Price's Army of Missouri. Federal Colonels Frederick W. Benteen and John H. Philips led the attack in one of the largest cavalry battles of the Civil War and a major battle fought in Kansas. After this battle, Union forces continued their pursuit of Price's army into Missouri, Arkansas, and Indian Territory (Oklahoma) ending the Confederate threat to Kansas. Learn about the cavalrymen--their food, weapons, and clothing. Their dramatic story comes alive at Mine Creek Battlefield.

  • We did not have time to actually tour the museum but the descriptive signs along the sidewalk gave a good explanation of the significance of the site. Good stop for Civil War buff.  more »

  • Its pretty small. Has a self guided tour. The exhibits are environmentally friendly with self powered stations along the trail. Very modest admission for a small museum. You can get a really up close and personal look at some of the artifacts. Sadly due to heavy rainfall recently the trail wasn't entirely accessible and was quite soggy.
  • Well maintained trails, informational placards, and a beautiful location! The perfect place for a short hike. Very family friendly.
