The Air Zoo, founded as the Kalamazoo Aviation History Museum, is an aviation museum and indoor amusement park next to the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek International Airport in Portage, Michigan. The Air Zoo holds many historical and rare aircraft, including the world's fastest air-breathing aircraft, the SR-71B Blackbird. Many of its antique planes are airworthy. Among its other attractions are a 180-degree theater that projects a 2-D film simulation of a B-17 bombing mission during World War II; and various amusement rides, including flight simulators of a rocket trip to Mars, a U.S. Navy (former Blue Angel) F/A-18 Hornet, a stunt biplane, a hot air balloon, a veteran U.S. Navy F-14A Tomcat that served aboard USS America, and more. • I think this is a great museum for all ages. We saw many families there with small children, but my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed it ourselves. There are many rides in the museum plus many interactive exhibits. Unfortunately most of them were not operating when we were there. If they were not, I could not imagine how much time we would have spent here; you can easily spend all day. Plan to give yourself enough time to check out the air plane refurbishment area at the back of the property which is also really neat and you can go in there with your admission wristband.
  • Recently my husband and I took our 15 year old granddaughter to visit the Restoration Building, and was given an amazing complete tour from Wayne! He took the time to show us various planes - those currently being restored, and those that were completed. We were introduced to other dedicated vets who stopped to explained what they were working on also. Every piece - big or little, was made with the utmost precision. Wayne gave us a very up close and special visit that all of us will remember! Thank you Wayne, and all of you for your service - past and present! Linda & Mike Dunphey
