Moraine State Park, Portersville

The gently rolling hills, lush forests and sparkling waters disguise a land that has endured the effects of continental glaciers and massive mineral extraction.

Each year over one million people visit the 16,725-acre park, yet never realize that many people helped restore the park from prior coal mining and oil and gas drilling practices. Today, the park is an outstanding example of environmental engineering achievement.

The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset, unless otherwise posted. Park information, launch permits, cabin information and assistance can be obtained at the park office near the entrance to the South Shore. It is open year-round, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and weekends during the summer.

A secondary office at the Davis Hollow Marina on the North Shore can provide marina applications and general park information. It is open from April 15 to October 30.

  • We thoroughly enjoyed the bike trail which was scenic and varied -- not the usual straight, level trail along a reclaimed railroad bed (which we also enjoy). There were considerable ups and downs, but...  more »
  • Great State park in Western PA that's easy to get to right off 79 and 422. There is something for every nature lover. Great wilderness paths for hiking and mountain biking but also paved paths for jogging and biking if looking for a smooth ride to enjoy the views. There are picnic areas for family get togethers with beaches and small playgrounds. Plenty of boat launches if you have a motorized boat or take a paddle boat or canoe out. Lake Moraine is great for fishing as well with a variety of fish to catch - Carp, Pike, Catfish, Trout, large and small mouth Bass, Blue Gill and Sun Fish just to name a few. They even have vending machines with live bait. Perfect place for a jog, swim, take a walk, have a picnic or just go to take in the beauty and unwind. If you can't tell Moraine State Park is one of my favorite places and deserving of the 5 stars I given.
  • About and hour away from Pittsburgh is this great park. Like boating? The lake is extremely large and seasonal boat rentals are available? Fishing is popular, both on boats and from the shore. Need a beach? Plenty of sand. Bathrooms available. Need some summer cooking? Grills and picnic tables are available. My favorite activity is to grill a burger and watch all the people enjoying themselves. Afterward, I got the snow cone vendor near the park's entrance. A perfect ending for a great day.
