Burnside Bridge, Portland

The Burnside Bridge is a 1926-built bascule bridge that spans the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon, United States, carrying Burnside Street. It is the second bridge at the same site to carry that name. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in November 2012.
The bridge was designed by Ira G. Hedrick and Robert E. Kremers, incorporating a bascule lift mechanism designed by Joseph Strauss.
Including approaches, the Burnside has a total length of 2308ft and a 251ft center span. While lowered this span is normally 64ft above the river. The deck is made of concrete, which contributes to its being one of the heaviest bascule bridges in the United States. The counterweights, housed inside the two piers, weigh 1700ST. The lifting is normally controlled by the Hawthorne Bridge operator, but an operator staffs the west tower during high river levels. As of 2005, the bridge opened for river traffic an average of 35 times a month.
The bridge provides shelter for the initially unauthorized Burnside Skatepark under the east end. On weekends, the Portland Saturday Market was held mostly under the bridge's west end for many years. The market was reoriented in 2009, but the Burnside Bridge continues to provide shelter for a few vendor stalls at the market's northern end.

  • This historic and relative attractive bridge is definitely worth a walk across. Each end provides insight to different slices of life as it's easy to explore inner city Portland from the east and the ...  more »
  • This titilant bridge was inaugurated in 1926. Your access takes you to the confluence of downtown with the Pearl District. Moving towards the center of the city, it is from it that you have a great frontal view of the iconic Portland Oregon Sign, a bright sign that is a registered trademark of the city.

  • One of the many draw bridge's giving Portland the nickname of Bridgetown it is a single deck middle split draw bridge (yes we a have double deck draw bridge) The bridge is like all others in Portland a one of a kind and sits approximately halfway between our two towering freeway bridge's (high enough to allow ship's through without disrupting traffic) With four other draw bridge's also in that stretch of the Willamette river all unique. The city also has side by side draw bridge's on I-5 separating Portland OR and Vancouver WA over the Columbia river.
  • THIS bridge is the best one to take pics of the Portland Oregon sign! Spend there like an hour with a friend and took pics. Would advice to get to the bridge just before sunset cause the view is great!
