Housed in a former Masonic Temple, Portland Art Museum holds a permanent collection of more than 42,000 works of art from around the world. This museum was founded in 1892 with the goal of creating a first-class art museum accessible to all of the community. Now, the museum continues to honor this mission, offering educational opportunities and special programs for children and adults. Explore the permanent collection, which includes European, Native American, Asian, American, and modern and contemporary art, as well as photography and graphic arts. After admiring the artwork, head to the on-site coffee shop to refuel or enjoy the scenery in the outdoor sculpture garden. The Frida Kahlo exhibition is well-done. I enjoyed the art and the photography - the exhibition is well-curated. Recommend seeing it.

Most recently, I went for the Mexican Modernist exhibit. While the exhibit was breathtaking, the lighting inhibited viewing the pieces in their best form. Several small black and white photographs were almost impossible to really see. Many in the crowd complained of not being able to see the pieces clearly, because of the lighting. For an exhibit with such high impact and visibility, it would have been a more enjoyable experience if all of the pieces were easily visible. The layout is really appealing. The staff are kind, courteous, and knowledgeable. It's always a pleasure to see historical works of art, up close and personal. I've been coming to PAM for forty years, and will continue to do so.

Great local art museum with a nice mix of galleries and artwork. The special exhibits can be quite impressive and I very much enjoyed the Ansel Adam's exhibit. Their permanent collections have top notch art and there are enough galleries to keep you coming back again and again without seeing the same thing twice.
