Established in 1974, it is located in both Multnomah and Columbia counties.Add Sauvie Island Wildlife Area and other attractions to your Portland trip itinerary using our Portland trip maker app.
The wildlife area covers the northern half of the island of 24,000 acres (9,700 ha), which lies at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers. Although the southern half of the island is home to about 500 people as well as farms and related businesses, the northern half, an important stop on the Pacific Flyway, preserves habitat for many kinds of waterfowl. About 300 species of wildlife, including bald eagles, pintails, red-tailed hawks, American kestrels, and many others, frequent the island.
Wetlands and bodies of water, including 21 lakes as well as sloughs, connecting channels, and streams such as the Gilbert River, abound in the wildlife area. Boat ramps provide access to paddlers along the Gilbert, at Oak Island in Sturgeon Lake, and at Steelman Lake, St. Helens, and along the Multnomah Channel. Sandy Columbia River beaches, including one that is clothing-optional, draw large numbers of people to the area's northern edge.
Sauvie Island Wildlife Area reviews
My husband and I visited Sauvie Island while exploring Portland as part of a broader West Coast trip. The entire island was pretty quiet. We visited Collins Beach, where there was plenty of parking..... more »
I spent hours picking berries. Boysenberries, rasberries marionberry, Sylvan and blueberries. The fields are enormous making it easy to get lost as you get your fill of berrries. more »
Great for wild life fishing hiking just enjoying the outdoors
I have been to the Sauvie Island farms many times so I already knew this is a great place to visit. This was my first time on the Island early in the morning. The landscape was absolutely stunning with the early morning mist. The beaches were empty and so peaceful just waiting for someone to come enjoy. This is a perfect place to bring the kids and dogs for an early morning walk on the beach.
