Admire The Grotto - National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother, a sanctuary spanning several floors with a rock cave carved into the base of a cliff. A life-sized replica of Michelangelo's Pi├Ęta sits as a centerpiece in the cave's shrine. Set amidst 25 ha (62 ac) of botanical gardens, the tranquility of the 34 m (110 ft) grotto serves as a place for reflection away from downtown Portland. Visit the large meditation hall that occupies the main chamber, and enjoy impressive views from the cliff top overlooking the Columbia River Valley. Wander through well-groomed parks home to several chapels and statues. You can also explore hundreds of trails through nearby forests. • The Grotto is a hidden gem in Portland. It's in the NE corner of the city tucked on top of some cliffs. Lots to see from all over the world. And the meditation building with the big glass view is...  more »

  • Serenity. The Grotto radiates it. Whether or not you are a person of faith, it's hard to imagine feeling anything but tranquility and peace in this outdoor palace of beauty. Take a deep breath before the wonderous gardens, shrine and chapel take your breath away! Although my favorite time to visit is at Christmas (the holiday just feels incomplete without seeing the lights!), The Grotto is open daily for a meditative stroll along garden paths (be sure to check out the upper gardens!), quiet, reflective prayer in the Chapel of Mary, or shopping for souvenirs and religious paraphernalia in the gift shop. At Christmas time, stop in to hear local school choirs, puppet shows, a petting zoo, and of course, the gorgeous Christmas light displays! The Grotto is among Portland's most important treasures, and a must-see for locals and visitors alike.
  • Missing this place so much to visit again!!! Already visited many times. Very beautiful and peaceful place to pray and relax. Feeling all of peaceful moments in all beautiful gardens and nature in 'The Grotto' is my most favorite part. And of course the amazing scenery of Portland seeing from the top. - From Vancouver BC Canada
