  • The monument is located in Ochoco Creek Park in the heart of Prineville, a short trip from Bend. It was dedicated in memory of 9 members of the Prineville Hot Shots, who were among 14 firefighters who died on July 6, 1994, while fighting the Storm King fire near Glenwood Springs, Colorado. The memorial is very impressive and quite moving. The parents of the 9 Hot Shots who died conceived of the memorial, and many others also donated to make it a reality. There are large boulders there with individual photos and bios of the firefighters who died. It is such a sad story, but it felt good to visit and pay tribute to their young lives while honoring wildland firefighters everywhere. Well worth visiting. While heading out that way, go further to see the painted hills, quite stunningly gorgeous.
