America's Founding Fathers Exhibit, Rapid City

4.4
#5 of 12 in Museums in Rapid City
The exhibit features the story of the 56 men who risked all they held dear by signing the Declaration of Independence. The centerpiece of

America's Founding Fathers is John Trumbull's painting "Declaration of Independence" presented as life-size statues. You're introduced to June 28, 1776, by first-person interpreters who tell the story of why and how we came to the point of declaring independence, the struggle and the Revolutionary War.

The gift store carries books about the Revolutionary War period, educational material and much more. We also have a Kentucky flintlock long rifle you can fire at the gun range.

  • This place was fantastic!! My 9-year old son was instantly drawn to the Liberty Bell replica out front and vigorously rang it. It was so loud! I was going to apologize when we walked in but the lovely woman running the museum said she loves it when we ring the bell. She was amazing! Very friendly and full of information. We walked around the shop and then enjoyed the program in Constitution Hall. It was so lifelike and informative. The entire family learned a lot in a short time. We arrived too late to shoot a real musket but next time, for sure!!
  • This was a fun activity for a rainy day. The presentation was very informative and well thought out. There were backgrounds to read on all of the signers of the declaration. Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to shoot a musket, but maybe next time. I definitely recommend a visit...you won't be disappointed.
