Set on over 101 hectares (250 acres) in the Black Hills, Bear Country USA hosts a large collection of North American mammals, particularly black bears. The park's animals generally move unhindered through outdoor exhibits. You'll see that the site is not a zoo, but rather a 4.8 km (3 mi) open air "safari" experience you can tour by car. Don't miss the park's special Babyland exhibit, where young animals and smaller species, such as the resident population of bear cubs, can often be seen playing. Bear Country USA was the best place I visited in South Dakota. You get to drive around and see animals that are in the wild, including bears, wolves, and reindeer. They even roam freely and is a great spot for pics! They have the best shirts in the Northwest too. We actually asked Emma to give us a discount in the gift shop, but she didn’t give us one. But we asked for the best local restaurant and she told us Ruby House in Keystone. It is local, amazing, and not touristy. Emma has worked there for six years, so she should get a promotion for her excellent customer service, or they should etch her face as the fifth face in Mt. Rushmore!
The drive through habitats of Elk, wolves, mountain lions, rams and bears then up to Bison is pretty cool. A couple years ago there was a white buffalo that was awe inspiring and a majestic creature, however I did not see it this yr. Arriving at the walk around enclosures and getting to see animals you would normally avoid like skunk, badgers, lynx... cubs. I think this yr the baby bears stole the show with their playful antics, climbing branches, dipping in the water and playful wrestling. It is good for all age groups and great for a family vacation site.
