Dinosaur Park, Rapid City

3.7
Showcasing seven lifesize dinosaurs overlooking the city, Dinosaur Park has been catching eyes since 1936. Initially gray, these iron and concrete giants were colored bright green and white in the 1950s. Most of them are meant to reflect fossils found in the area. See the models of Apatosaurus, Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, Anatotitan, Protoceratops, and a nondinosaur Dimetrodon--an ancestor of dinosaurs. These all look somewhat goofy by today's standards, and are sometimes described as being from the Flintstones' world. Take in the 160 km (100 mi) view of the surrounding area from this overlook above the town. Arrange to visit Dinosaur Park and other attractions in Rapid City using our Rapid City trip site .

  • We did enjoy seeing the dinosaurs as it brought the child out in us. It is a shame that the exhibits could all use a little bit of a paint touch up, but otherwise it was a fun place. The views were sp...  more »
  • You can see the largest dinosaur from just about anywhere in town, standing way up on on the hill. All week we said we were going up there, and we finally did. Beautiful views of the city, especially ...  more »
  • We stumbled upon this place and we're glad we did. Beautiful views of the city from the hilltop. The park was built in 1936 and is a historic park. The kids enjoyed the giant dinosaurs.  more »

  • I loved visiting as a kid & so happy my children can enjoy it as well! Its a nice fun drive up skyline drive and the dinosaurs don't disappoint! They are so tall & huge! My children are memorized by them! Beautiful view at the top as well! Lots of steps so don't bring a stroller! It's surprising to find it so clean & taken care of so well! Gift shop is fun to visit as well!
  • The drive up to Dinosaur Park included a beautiful view of Rapid City on Skyline Drive. We were happy to see they had decent prices for their food as well as a deck to eat on that also let you look down on the city. They had an adorable gift shop, also and we purchased some shirts for our kids, marked at again decent prices. The park itself was just a few dinosaurs and not so much a park with just statues, but we still enjoyed ourselves and the adventure getting to it
  • This place was SO fun! But, also very hard to find for us tourists. There are very very few signs marking the way. But once you wind your way there, it is so much fun! I just love all of the amazing things they have in their gift store, it was like stepping back in time. My sons had a blast! And so did their dad and I! We will definitely be returning here someday. I highly recommend it.
  • My son loves dinosaur park as much as I did in the 80s! While standing next to the dinosaurs and even climbing on them is exciting for him, his favorite part is to hike the paths behind it. Some awesome views of the the big brontosaurus from just below in the trees. We visit often for a quick jaunt up the hill and through the trees!
  • What a great place to visit! The drive up was very scenic, and parking and the dinosaur park is free. There‚Äôs five large dinosaurs at the top of a large hill that over looks the city and it was a lot of fun for the kids and adults. The gift shop was nice and also had snacks. Definitely worth a stop!
