A living lesson in aviation history, South Dakota Air and Space Museum houses a collection of aircraft ranging from World War II transport planes to modern supersonic bombers. Located just outside the main gate of an operational Air Force base, the museum strives to educate and entertain visitors by offering 50-minute guided bus tours of a deactivated missile silo from the Cold War. All visitors to the base must pass a security check, so be sure to bring a valid photo ID, such as a passport or driver's license. Admission to the museum is free; there is a charge for bus tours.   • In a city no larger than Rapid City, the museum at Ellsworth AFB far exceeds expectations if you are interested in military aviation history. Bombers, B-1 and B-29, among others are on display as is....  more »
  • If anyone in your group is a fan of planes or aviation, this is a must see! There are a lot of cool planes, and some great aviation history inside. There were several planes that landed on the Air.....  more »

  • Very interesting things to read about. There was a pilot named Clyde Ice and among many things he was a flight instructor. The interesting part is how he was the flight instructor for other aviators that went on to do something significant in aviation. He is mentioned in a few other bios and in the video that is shared there. Plus they got cool planes.
  • Loved being able to get up close to the airplanes and seeing the memorabilia inside and outside (self guided). The bus tour onto the airbase to tour the inside of a minuteman missile silo was the best. Our tour guide was very pleasant and extremely knowledgeable on the history of the missile program. You could tell he himself lived and served his country. Thank you so much!
