  • Well-kept unique nature and cultural preserve with easier trails doable for kids. Most of the trails are shaded so not too bad even in the summer heat. Definitely worth the short journey from downtown Charleston. Lots of baby alligators to see and beautiful birds. Situated on what was a rice plantation and that history is kept there in a meaningful and informative way.
  • only getting four stars and here is why. 1. the far rice/marsh trail is still washed out. it needs more that a sign that says trail closed. how about a signage that says "trail washed out from a storm, repairs are dependent on donations and congress approving a grant" or something like that 2.the trails are not marked well. when i get to a four way intersection which way do i go when the sign post only has 3 directions 3. hard to follow paper map and sign post. they don't hit the mark, could be better symmetry between both overall it was great, i would suggest if you have small children and want to keep them alive that you stay to the swamp board walk, and woodland and not venture to the Rice fields or Marsh area. there are some big alligators that hide along the 15 foot wide mowed path. 1 saw one belly slide , over by the bald eagle nest and a couple told us a big mama blocked the trail. also heard what I thought was a large animal moving into the water, also over by the bald eagle nest. we did see a bald eagle, some other birds and an 6 foot American alligator
