Barn Bluff (Dakota: Ȟemníčhaŋ, frequently anglicized to He Mni Can) is a bluff along the Mississippi River in Red Wing, Minnesota, United States. The bluff is considered sacred by the Dakota people because it is the site of many burial mounds. During the 19th century, the bluff functioned as a visual reference for explorers and travelers and later served as a limestone quarry.
The bluff overlooks the downtown area and towers about 400 feet (120 m) above the Mississippi River with an extensive view of Lake Pepin to the south. It is one of hundreds of bluffs in the Driftless Area, which covers parts of Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois, in addition to the southeastern toe of Minnesota.

  • Great trails back side and from the front side. Stairs in some areas metal and cut rock. Rock climers use the back side by the river to climb and its fun to see how well they can climb the faces...

  • Kudos to the volunteers and City employees & electeds who have honored the Native American heritage. The trails marked as more difficult justify bringing along your Keens or favorite hiking shoes.

  • Spectacular view, it’s a easy to moderate hike. Lots of steps but definitely worth the climb. It’s about 30minute to reach the top and another 30minute down, this is a leisurely hike. My husband and I took our boys age 6 and 9 and they loved it.
  • Great place to hike and take drone shots (if it's not too windy). Get a good pair of shoes on and get hiking.
