Sailor's Creek Battlefield Historical State Park is a great place to stop for lunch because it's midway between Petersburg and Appomattox Court House. There are charcoal grills and picnic tables at the Overton-Hillsman House and the visitor center grounds. No water is available. A pit-toilet is available during daylight hours.
It's a historical site because on April 6, 1865 - the Black Thursday of the Confederacy - Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia lost 7,700 men, including eight generals, in the Battle of Little Sailor's Creek. This defeat was key to Lee's decision to surrender at Appomattox Court House 72 hours later, thus ending the war in Virginia. Click here to download a brochure that details the battle (PDF).
The Overton-Hillsman House, used as a field hospital during and after the battle, is open to visitors June through August and by request at other times. Contact the park at (804) 561-7510 or email email@example.com to arrange a special tour. Period costumed interpreters commemorate the event and conduct other living history events throughout the year. Motorists will enjoy Lee's Retreat Driving Tour, which follows the route of his army from Petersburg to Appomattox Court House. While on the trail, drivers can set the radio to AM 1610 for battle details and descriptions. Sailor's Creek Battlefield Historical State Park reviews
First we walked the battlefield trails. The dogs loved it. Nice wide paths so we could easily walk side by side and chat. There were about a dozen people out there and it is so beautiful and quiet...

This was my first visit to Sailor's Creek and I was impressed. I'm a Civil War buff, but only knew the executive summary of the battle. I decided to stop here on the way to my destination in order..... more

A beautiful and somber place. Terrific and interesting exhibits, and Reverend Schroeder has encyclopedic knowledge of the battlefield and ferocity of the combat. The soldiers on both sides possessed courage, fortitude and devotion to duty. May we emulate their character and honor their sacrifice.
Very nice visitor's center with informative displays. Good self-guided vehicle tour with informative pamphlet.
