Sailor's Creek Battlefield is one of our 37 Virginia State Parks. Please visit our official page at

Sailor's Creek Battlefield Historical State Park is a great place to stop for lunch because it's midway between Petersburg and Appomattox Court House. There are charcoal grills and picnic tables at the Overton-Hillsman House and the visitor center grounds. No water is available. A pit-toilet is available during daylight hours.

It's a historical site because on April 6, 1865 - the Black Thursday of the Confederacy - Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia lost 7,700 men, including eight generals, in the Battle of Little Sailor's Creek. This defeat was key to Lee's decision to surrender at Appomattox Court House 72 hours later, thus ending the war in Virginia. Click here to download a brochure that details the battle (PDF).

The Overton-Hillsman House, used as a field hospital during and after the battle, is open to visitors June through August and by request at other times. Contact the park at (804) 561-7510 or email to arrange a special tour. Period costumed interpreters commemorate the event and conduct other living history events throughout the year. Motorists will enjoy Lee's Retreat Driving Tour, which follows the route of his army from Petersburg to Appomattox Court House. While on the trail, drivers can set the radio to AM 1610 for battle details and descriptions. • Like other reviews have previously stated, this isn’t a super well known spot for civil war history but it’s definitely worth it to come and see! There are numerous trails within the park you can...  more »
  • The Battle of Sailor's Creek was not a small Civil War battle, but it also is probably not even in the Top 50 most well-known Civil War battles. You wouldn't know it from this Park, though, which...  more »
  • A really great place to walk our dog, she doesn't like other dogs or people and this park was almost empty. She and us had a great hike. The visitors center is full of information and artifacts from the civil war. The gentleman behind the desk was super friendly and there was another gentleman in civil war era clothing.
  • I'm actually from this area, my land boarders the state parks property. There is an old hospital here that serviced all the soldiers, there is still actual soldier's blood on the floor. there are actual 2 war cannons here, nice landscape, it's kind of hilly, there is a visitor center that's pretty nice, they have a lot of actual civil war relics inside, also there is a good historian there also. Every year they have a reenactment with 1,000s of soldiers and horses. This place has a small but nice rest area, I "don't think" there's any rest rooms at the rest area, but there are restrooms at the visitors center. This area has a tremendous opportunity for growth! Hopefully they will expand and make it more inviting. For there are other historical fixtures that goes beyond the state park that are in nearby woods. The closes store and gas station is approx. 10 minutes away, closes hotels and medical facility are approx. 15-20 minutes away.
