Maymont, Richmond

#1 of 13 in Parks in Richmond
The Maymont estate boasts a historical house museum, arboretum, formal gardens, wildlife exhibits, a children's farm and more. James H. Dooley, a wealthy lawyer and philanthropist, and his wife acquired the estate in 1886. After their deaths, it was bestowed to people of Richmond. Take a guided tour of the couple's Gilded Age mansion to learn about their lives and the times they lived in. In addition to the animals kept on the farm, a number of injured animals live here, including bald eagles, black bears, and American bison. If you would like to feed the farm animals, bring quarters to use in the grain dispensers. Stop for a bite to eat at the Robin's Nest cafe, or bring along a picnic. • I've been to Maymont Park just about every year for about 10 years straight now and while I live in Virginia, I think that will continue. The scenery is just beautiful and it is just fun to walk and take in the smells. Maymont Park seems to be a pretty popular spot for weddings and one lap through the park or through the Italian Garden and you will quickly see why. There is a lot for adults to enjoy and even more for kids. Take a drive, explore the grounds, you will not be disappointed.
  • A lovely place to visit and to have a picnic. The park is large, and very well kept. The gardens are especially beautiful. My favorite spot is the Italian Garden. If you need a nice and relaxing place to visit, this is definitely the place to go in Richmond.
