Frank Lloyd Wright's Laurent House, Rockford

4.6
#3 of 6 in Museums in Rockford
The Kenneth and Phyllis Laurent House is a single-story, solar hemicycle Usonian designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1949. The residence is a rare mid-century example of a handicapped accessible home that was designed to be both functional and beautiful.

Built of Chicago Common Brick and Red Tidewater Cypress, the house hugs the property and blends flawlessly with its natural landscape. When the home was built, the lot was considered on the edge of town. The City of Rockford has since grown to surround the neighborhood, yet the area still retains its rural feel with large wooded lots and curvilinear roads.

The home is a fine example of Wright’s Usonian architecture as exemplified by its smaller footprint, slab construction, carport, and outdoor connectivity.

  • Designed and built for wheelchair accessibility. Better done in many ways than what Architects do today.
  • Hidden in a suburban neighborhood, this "little gem" (Wright's term) is just that. Basically billed as Wright's only home designed for a disabled client, it is that and so much more. A Usonian half semi-circle whose arc was scribed from a local cherry tree, the vison, materials, methods and lasting preservation are well worth your time. Additionally, the depth of knowledge your docent will provide will expand your own while and be entertaining at the same time. If you visit, call first to set up your visit, there wasn't anyone there when we drove up. However, staff who answered the phone quickly set up a time for the docent to meet us there at a time that was convenient for us. Well worth your time and money, if you are a Wright fan or just into mid-century architecture.
