Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland

4.6
Farnsworth Art Museum exhibits American art works, particularly works with a focus on the state of Maine. The museum is well-known for its collection of works by George Bellows, William Zorach, and Andrew Wyeth. The museum also owns the Olson house, a National Historic Landmark and the subject of several paintings by Wyeth, including the famous "Christina's World." Stroll through the museum's galleries to see paintings and photographs of Maine and its people. Don't miss Louise Nevelson's works, which helped to modernize American sculpture. • Good museum, very Maine-centric. Lots of works by Andrew Wyeth of course, but many interesting exhibitions on the calendar... Definitely worth going to if you’re in town and interested in art. It’s in an older building so the layout can be less than straightforward, make sure you get a map and use it so you don’t miss anything! The gift shop is nice and accessible from the street without having to pay the museum admission.
  • The farnsworth is a great museum with good exhibit rotation. The museum often gets great traveling exhibits too. It is definitely worth going to, thank you for supporting it. The museum is pricey, though, for what it is so it's great that the museum is free to Rockland residents. Why 3 star? The security. Front desk staff have always been nice to me. But I and people I know have had many experiences with the security staff being rude. I especially do not recommend bringing small children to the main exhibit hall (under ten). If you are an adult, you will enjoy their fine collection. But probably leave your kids at home. That won't save you from rude security, but give you a fighting chance.
