Oak Hill & The Martha Berry Museum Reviews
The mansion reveals what life was like in the late 1880's. Although renovated in the early 1900's, walking through the house and gardens evokes a slower paced life. Situated on the grounds of Berry.... more »
If you have ever seen the movie Sweet Home Alabama, you will have seen the Carmichael plantation house (the one where the anvil falls into the gazebo). Well that house is the Oak Hill museum located..... more »
I'll be honest, my husband and I only came here because I wanted to see the house from Sweet Home Alabama. We got there just after the last tour of the day had been taken down to get the tour of the house, but a kind young guy offered to take us down anyway. We caught up with the tour that had only just begun seeing the house. Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgable about the house and the life of Martha Berry and made the tour very interesting. She even answered almost all of the questions one of the other guests had about the structure of the building and materials used (which was a LOT). Everything was gorgeous and well kept and everyone working there was so kind.
We visited the museum as a starting point for a tour of the House of Dreams. We had zero expectations and no knowledge of the museum or the Martha Berry story. After walking through the museum, we left impressed both by the Martha Berry story and the excellent historical story-telling found in the museum. We were especially intrigued by the link to Henry Ford and the Ford Foundation, and the other relationships developed by Martha Berry that made her educational projects possible. Beyond the museum, the nearby walking trails and the campus are phenomenal. Don't miss the Log Cabin or the gift shop, located outside the main building.
