The Turf Club is a bar, restaurant and music venue in Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States. Originally a dance hall in the 1940s, the Turf Club has since the 1990s been popular with Twin Cities bands, a sharp contrast to previous years when most local bands only played Minneapolis venues. The club has also become an important venue for national and international touring acts. Japanese indie-rock band Shonen Knife played its 1,000th show at the Turf Club.Use our Saint Paul itinerary planning tool to add Turf Club and other attractions to your Saint Paul vacation plans.
The Turf Club was sold to the owners of First Avenue in late 2013. The venue has a capacity of about 350. The club's basement hosts a smaller bar and performance space, the Clown Lounge, which is used for jazz gigs. The Turf Club is located on the north side of University Avenue near Snelling Avenue and across the street from the Snelling Avenue light rail station on the Green Line. In 2014, the club received a substantial remodel, including an upgraded sound system and the return of a mural featuring five racehorses which had been forgotten, hidden behind curtains, for decades.
Turf Club reviews
We went to the Turf Club specifically to see one of our favorite bands (Carbon Leaf). We took the Green Line light rail from our hotel near the U of M to nearly the front door of the club, which was..... more »
I was there for a concert. I was really pleased to see there were plenty of tables and chairs to sit at in the back as well as room to stand up front. The sound system was excellent and the sound... more »
1st off: we got here at 7:56 for an 8pm show. We we're THE ONLY ONES there. No one waiting behind us. The guy at the door told us we had to go downstairs or wait outside for 4 MINUTES! Customer service at the door is dead... So if you are coming here for the purpose of LISTENING to whatever band is playing, don't come. Seriously the band won't get any respect from the audience so save your time.. however, drinks are good, food is great, venue is amazing. But damn people do not know how to stop talking. I'm sitting her at the Dead Horses show. These guys are INCREDIBLE!!! I just wish the rest of the bar would either go downstairs to talk or shut their mouths! I can't hear the music through all the chatty Kathy's. It's ridiculous. For a place that is so strict on letting people in the damn door, I would have thought they would have had a better audience for a paid show.....
Really cool venue for a concert! We drove 7 hours down from Winnipeg to catch The Glorious Sons on Feb. 27th, and boy was it worth it. Such a cool building, and our server was fantastic! She was working a busy section alone and still crushed it and was extremely friendly. Coat check girl was also very nice. We came with friends who live in the area and they too really enjoyed the venue. Food was very good as well for typical bar grub. Altogether just a wonderful experience, I hope someday to have a reason to return! Thank you!
