Allegany State Park, Salamanca

The Official Page for Allegany State Park. Allegany State Park's 65,000 acres is known for its primitive forested valleys, un-glaciated landscape, fall leaves and wildlife. The two developed areas, Red House and Quaker, make this the largest state park in the system. Both areas offer sand beaches, picnic areas, museums, hiking trails and naturalist walks. Walkers and bicycle riders take advantage of the 5 miles of paved trails around Red House. The Art Roscoe Ski Touring Area has some of the finest groomed cross country skiing and mountain bike trails in the Northeast. Snowmobilers are attracted to Allegany State Park for its 90 miles of groomed snowmobile trails and over 150 winterized cabins. Other activities include bird watching, picnicking, fishing, hunting, snowshoeing, canoeing, and horseback riding. Visitors looking for anything from a weekend retreat to an extended vacation are able to choose from Allegany State Park's 424 campsites, 375 cabins and three group camps available for rental. There are year round vacation rental cottages that are fully equipped with the latest conveniences located in both the Red House and Quaker areas.

The seven Fancher Cottages are located in the southern part of the Allegany State park, adjacent to Quaker Run Creek and offer guests a unique camping experience. Named for Senator Albert T. Fancher, the "Father of Allegany State Park," each Fancher Cottage (located in the historic Quaker Area of the park) has a bathroom with shower, refrigerator, counter-top range and microwave. The fully accessible cottages sleep six, are furnished and stocked with pillows, bedding, cooking utensils, dishes and coffeemakers. In addition, each cottage has a grill and picnic table outside.

Reminiscent of a classic hunting lodge, the Pitt Cottage in the Red House Area offers the same amenities as the Fancher Cottages. One outstanding feature of the Pitt Cottage is its gas burning stone fireplace. Located on Allegany State Park Rte. 2, the cottage is adjacent to Congdon Trail and three miles from the Administration Building. Pitt Cottage is not handicapped accessible

It is likely that you will encounter wildlife during your stay at Allegany State Park. Some of these encounters may occur in high use areas, such as picnic areas, cabin trails and tent and trailer sites. Be advised that feeding (intentionally or unintentionally) and harassing wildlife, especially bear, may result in fines and/or eviction. Please report nuisance wildlife activity in high use areas to Park staff.

  • Been coming here my entire life and now that I live in North Carolina, the annual trip home is extra special time. Lots of places to hike and explore and red house lake is great for paddle boarding, k...  more »
  • National parks in the U.S. are huge. Accordingly, it is difficult to give an assessment for the entire park. The Logan Falls Trail is recommended. Those who are sure to walk (sturdy footwear and please don't flip-flops) can experience a beautiful waterfall on this trail, which is only 0.5 miles long. Not bombastic, but beautiful. The place is not overcrowded, so you can also stop in nature. Since the mile-long forest paths can be used, an all-terrain vehicle is recommended.

  • Where else can go on a family vacation and create great memories for such a great price. The Allegany cabins take the worry of money out of the equation. Every cabin has it's own charm. ;) Some of the trails have nicer bathrooms than others. Yes, it DOES make a difference! The Anderson trail has 17 cabins, each cabin CAN have up to 6 people and ONE shower to accommodate. Luckily for us, we went during the off season and there were less 4 cabins rented for most of the week. My wife and I have been going for years. Most years, twice a year. We always bring way too much to eat and drink and half the comforts of home. (And we usually have lots of guests.) We like the outdoors, from what we can see from the front porch! :) :)
  • Always a great day at the park.. This place has two wonderful sides, Quaker and Red House. Both have great lakes for swimming or kayaking, camp stores, plenty of hiking and bike trails, cabins from the basic to full bathroom and tent sites with plenty of cover from sun and neighbors. How can you not love it?
