#5 of 7 in Nature in Salt Lake City
Canyon · Hidden Gem · Nature / Park
Millcreek Canyon (also Mill Creek Canyon) is a canyon in the Wasatch Mountains and part of Millcreek City on the east side of the Salt Lake Valley, Utah. It is a popular recreation area both in the summer and in the winter. It was named by Brigham Young on August 22, 1847 before all of the mills that were built in and below the densely forested canyon. It is home to two restaurants and six Boy Scout Day Camps.

Millcreek Canyon is next to Parley's Canyon on the north and Big Cottonwood Canyon on the south. Though perhaps the most accessible canyon to Salt Lake City, its upper reaches are much less visited than neighboring canyons.

  • I rode up and down the canyon on a hire bike. It’s a steady climb with some steeper parts towards the start, but doable for a lot of regular cyclists. Weather was pretty mixed so views not great...  more »
  • While this canyon gets too much traffic and I recommend avoiding it on weekends, there are wonderful trails here that don't get visited very often. On my favorite trail I rarely encounter anyone...  more »

  • Millcreek has great sites for picnics and a lot of great hikes. You pay $3 per vehicle on the way out of the canyon. You can bring your odd dog into the canyon on odd days! Grandeur peak is a classic hike that is moderate and can get pretty hot in the summer as it is entirely on the south side of the canyon. It is mostly shaded though. Also, if you want a fun mountain bike trail try out the pipeline (if possible, shuttle it to avoid a boring uphill ride after an awesome well graded trail).
  • What a beautiful hike! My dog loved it and we loved the off leash on odd days. If you drive to the very top- there is a hike to dog lake. My dog loved swimming after the hike and loves playing with the other dogs.
