Lots of fun pioneer activities for the family. Pull authentic pioneer handcarts, learn to square dance, ride on a horse-drawn carriage and buy old-fashioned candy from the General Store. more »
Just experienced the Christkindlmarkt at this site. Hundreds and hundreds of people participated in this great event! It seems only to run for three days at the beginning of December. There are numerous booths selling hand-crafted items and freshly prepared German and Swiss foods. There was also a large stage with various acts - especially loved the yodeller and bell ringer dude! And there was a parade - of sorts. Nice event that obviously took a lot of planning and foresight. The normal park seems quite fascinating as well.
First of all, spending time on their website is really a good idea. From November to April, the activities are fewer and some things reduced (including prices). The train doesn't go around quite as far. But for all the rest of the year (Spring-Summer-Fall), there are many options. The Park is a spread-out, wide-open expanse of land a little more than 400 acres / 1.7 km2. Best to start at the big monument (near the visitor's center) and read about the pioneers, take in the great view of the valley. For first-time comers to Utah, this is an excellent place to start. Give yourself a leisurely day to ramble through all of it. Ride the train, walk through the pioneer houses, pet farm animals, make a craft item, see costumes. Above the monument via the little train, is a Native American village showing teepees, and there's a gift shop up there. Down below where the train starts, is a great "pink house" that's got neat history, and it's right across from the horseback riding stables. Definitely read the website and see the schedule for things. Peaceful, clean, big-open-sky and cooler air up above the city, especially high up at the tee pees "on the windswept hillside" as someone put it.
