One of the largest venues of its kind in the world, San Diego Model Railroad Museum features a number of scale model railorads and layouts. The four clubs that created and maintain these exhibits are the San Diego Model Railroad Association, La Mesa Model Railroad Club, San Diego Society of N-Scale, and San Diego 3-Railers. Children adore the hands-on "Lionel type" layouts at the museum's toy train gallery. Since opening in 1982, almost 3 million visitors have spent time learning and playing at this interactive and informative museum.   This small museum is located along El Prado in Balboa Park, near the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum. Groups of model train enthusiasts have constructed large railroad layouts complete.....  more »

  One of San Diego's best highlights. Even if you aren't a big railroad person it is interesting. The model trains are very interesting and the attention to detail is impressive. Worth 90 minutes of your time. Just sit and watch the models.

  What an amazing place! Passionate staff and club members. They've put alot of time and skill the layouts at the museum. I have been there twice and enjoyed it both times!
