Angel Island State Park, San Francisco

#3 of 12 in Nature in San Francisco
State Park · Hidden Gem · Nature / Park
The second largest island in San Francisco Bay, Angel Island State Park was once an immigration point and a quarantine island. Take a public ferry or private boats from the city to the island, where you can capture photos of the city across the bay. Along with biking and hiking trails, the park is home to the Angel Island Immigration Station, which operated from 1910 to 1940. The military used the island in the 19th century, when the entire island was known as Fort McDowell, the East Garrison. • This is a great place to go hiking or biking and you could go on a tour bus around The island but I am not sure if the bus is running at this time because of COVID-19 after the cove at 19 is over....  more »
  • This is a fantastic place to visit if you want hiking or beach combing away from the crowds, including a fun ferry ride. We walked the Perimeter Loop. Although they recommend 2.5 hours to hike it...  more »
  • A lovely place with panoramic views of the Bay & Golden Gate bridge from the top of Mt.Livermore - a mellow hike which takes about 2 hours round-trip. Picnic tables with excellent views along the way. The cafe on the island is closed due to Covid restrictions. The island has maps and clean restrooms near the ferry dock.
  • One of the unique spots to take a day trip. There's a trail to the top of the hill on the island. The ferry leaves from Tiburon. Not sure there's one from SF direct. Its a great idea to check the ferry times to make sure that you don't miss the last one out from the Island. There's also a cute little beach that has a wonderful view of the city.
