de Young Museum, San Francisco

Specialty Museum · Hidden Gem · Museum
Rebuilt after an earthquake, de Young Museum can resist seismic shaking with its striking twisted tower. This modern complex in Golden Gate Park holds collections of American and contemporary international art. Archives of American art dating back to the 17th century, including textiles and costumes, make the museum exceptional. Textiles come from as far away as Turkey, and the costumes showcase early fashions from designers such as Christian Dior. • Worth the difficulty of setting there. A word to those arriving by auto: do not leave anything visible in your car as the odds are that you window will be broken and your things stolen.  more »
  • We visited the deYoung to view the current exhibits and stayed for lunch at the cafe. This was just prior to the restrictions currently in place. Food is good but the beverages are way too...  more »

  • The De Young museum is located on the edge of Golden Gate Park adjacent to the California Academy of Sciences. It us situated in a beautiful courtyard with 3 majestic fountains and beautiful landscaping. The De Young features a free lookout point at the very top of the building, which is a beautiful modern copper structure, a piece of art in itself. Featuring great variety of rotating exhibits and a vibrant permanent collection. Very much worth checking out and at a reasonable price, especially for students. Would definitely recommend.
  • I love the De Young Museum because, when I get into the quieter galleries, the museum has the feel of the "traditional" museums where it's hushed, and I can wander from gallery to gallery in that quiet atmosphere. It's nostalgic to me. (These comments are similar to the comments I made for the Legion of Honor.) I love it enough that I have decided to become a member. Special exhibits come and go; it's the permanence of the De Young that draws me in.
