Grace Cathedral, San Francisco

See a church famous for its mosaics, labyrinths, stained-glass windows, and both medieval and contemporary furnishings when you visit Grace Cathedral. As you approach the towering cathedral, be sure to walk the first labyrinth before making your way to the doors. Before you enter, note that the doors are a famed replica of Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise. Once inside, you can walk the second labyrinth, or wander through the cathedral to admire the murals by De Rosen and the 66 stained-glass windows created by a variety of artists. If you time it right, you may be able to hear the 44-bell carillon, three organs, or one of the men's and boys' choirs. Stop by the shop for prayer books, music, and gifts, or grab a drink from the downstairs coffee shop. To take a tour, it's best to sign up in advance. Printed visitor guides are available in several languages. Put Grace Cathedral and other San Francisco attractions into our San Francisco road trip planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • A beautiful cathedral. There are brochures about the different art and stained glass. We went here when Notre Dame was on fire and they had colored lights on to honor Paris.  more »
  • Having spent a long day seeing so much in SF, we opted to just take a walk in the evening so only looked at the exterior of the cathedral. It is beautiful, and we may try to go inside on another visit...  more »

  • This is the coolest church I've ever been to. The priests/clergy are really inclusive of the entire SF community, and try to make the cathedral a gathering place for all. I love attending Yoga on the Labyrinth on Tuesday afternoons - it's donation based yoga, in a cathedral, with live music. AWESOME!
  • Unbelievable. The architecture, first of all, was truly exceptional, especially for how long ago it was built. I was amazed by the variety if beautiful artwork, ranging from murals, to sculptures to tapestries. Singing in it was fantastic, and an experience I will always remember.
