Create an itinerary including Grace Cathedral
See a church famous for its mosaics, labyrinths, stained-glass windows, and both medieval and contemporary furnishings when you visit Grace Cathedral. As you approach the towering cathedral, be sure to walk the first labyrinth before making your way to the doors. Before you enter, note that the doors are a famed replica of Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise. Once inside, you can walk the second labyrinth, or wander through the cathedral to admire the murals by De Rosen and the 66 stained-glass windows created by a variety of artists. If you time it right, you may be able to hear the 44-bell carillon, three organs, or one of the men's and boys' choirs. Stop by the shop for prayer books, music, and gifts, or grab a drink from the downstairs coffee shop. To take a tour, it's best to sign up in advance. Printed visitor guides are available in several languages. Put Grace Cathedral on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our San Francisco road trip planner.

  • Built post earth quake the Cathedral was designed to withstand the next large event. Beautiful grounds, with a nice labyrinth outside. Inside is very good, not European quality but for an American...

  • One of the architecturally standout buildings in San Francisco with a large and unique stained glass window. Serene atmosphere within. Impressive programs to interest people. Walking the labyrinth there is a must have experience. They used to regularly host yoga classes on Tuesdays which were great. Location right at the top of nob hill makes it easy to walk down in any direction and still find yourself in some or the other iconic neighborhood in San Francisco. Lovely place.
  • It is very disappointing that Grace Cathedral is no longer hosting the Festival of Remember service, a tradition which goes back many decades. This wonderful, well attended event was co-hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion. It is a terrible shame that in that magnificent Cathedral, we are deprived of getting together and honoring the fallen who gave their lives during the two great wars. It was a very moving service. One can't imagine that the Reverend Alan Jones (who presided over the event for many years) would not have condoned the Cathedral's decision to cancel this event. E. Ian Chadwick
