Park · Hidden Gem · Nature / Park
Pioneer Park is a 4.89-acre (19,800 m2) park crowning the top of Telegraph Hill in San Francisco. It was established in 1876 in celebration of the United States Centennial. Prior to establishment of the park, it was the site of the Marine Telegraph Station. The main feature of the park, Coit Tower, was completed in 1933 using a $118,000 bequest left to the city by Lillie Hitchcock Coit in 1929. A bronze statue of Christopher Columbus was placed in the park in 1957, and removed in June, 2020.

  • Some people don't realize Coit Tower is located *in* Pioneer Park. I think most assume the park is part of Coit Tower, not vice versa. It's a cute park, but with anywhere in Eastern San Francisco...  more »
  • A must visit if you are in SF. Monument is excellently maintained and views of the bay right out to the Golden Gate are stunning, although the tall bushes prevent any veiw on the town side. You can go into the monument but check the opening times as it was closed when I went there around 7pm. Also better not to go in the late evening as the sun low in the sky will blind your view of the Golden Gate. Walk up is around half a mile and quite steep, but there were cars up there so presume driving is possible.
  • Pioneer Park is a worthwhile track up to see the great expanse of San Francisco. The San Francisco foliage frames the city in a gorgeous perspective. You will feel small to a wide cosmopolitan world, especially after elevating yourself up all the steep inclines and stairs.
