The attraction to Winchester Mystery House lies in its architecture and lack of any master building plan, as much as for its ghost stories. The widow of William Wirt Winchester, who built the house, began construction only after her husband died and left her a huge fortune. A medium told her this fortune should be used to build a house for the ghosts of the people who were killed by her husband's famous rifles. The architectural curiosities were added continuously from 1884 to 1922. Take a guided tour to learn all the quirky stories of the haunted rooms. Make a reservation online. Winchester Mystery House Reviews
My family enjoys visiting historical homes and this was no exception. It is somewhat expensive for a 1+ hour tour, but you’ve never seen anything like this place. The tour guide, Jett, did a good job ... more »
This was a must visit for us in the San Francisco area and it didn’t disappoint. It was about an hour out of San Francisco and we had to hire a care to get there. We did both tours, the main house tou... more »
This was probably the best tour experience we've ever had! Our tour guide (Gene) was really great. Very knowledgeable, friendly, and he just made it fun. Beautiful house and interesting stories. We highly recommend. We did not do the "explore more" part of the tour (adds 40 more rooms that used to be unavailable to the public for an extra $10; regular tour shows 110 rooms for $40) and felt we still had plenty to see. Go in the morning if you can. We went on a Saturday morning, got tickets at the door, and ended up in a small group of about 10, which was awesome. The afternoon was already sold out when we woke that morning, and we saw that those groups were bigger (around 20). If you need afternoon tickets, buy a few days in advance. There is talk about spirits and ghosts, but it's not scary, so would be fine for children. Again, we highly recommend. Don't go to San Jose and miss this tour!
Was a little bit leery about doing the tour at the Winchester house I am someone that does believe in ghosts or at least the afterlife the hairs on the back of my neck stood up and got goosebumps on my arms it was a very interesting experience. Awesome, good experience and fun. Helpful staff, came earlier than the tickets we purchased. And they were able to book us one hour before. Worked wonderfully since the family wanted to do shopping and lunch at the mall close by.
