Mission San Juan Capistrano is a former Spanish mission founded in 1776 in colonial Las Californias by Spanish Catholic missionaries of the Franciscan Order. Named for Saint John of Capistrano, the Spanish Colonial Baroque style church was located in the Alta California province of the Viceroyalty of New Spain. Today, it is located at 26801 Ortega Highway in San Juan Capistrano, Orange County, California. The Mission was secularized by the Mexican government in 1833, and returned to the Roman Catholic Church by the American government in 1865. The mission was damaged over the years by a number of natural disasters, but restoration and renovation efforts date from around 1910.

  • No matter what your faith or even if you are non denominational this mission is truly a natural and man made wonder. Having being born in Italy and having seen so many churches, religious architecture, monasteries, convents, I must say I was impressed with all its art, natural art, and man made wonders from so long ago. It was peaceful and tranquil. I enjoyed it very much and would go back many times if I lived closer.
  • A living museum and place for reflection. Anyone can visit and walk the grounds, no religious background is needed for the history lesson contained on the grounds. Artwork and architecture are on display to study and appreciate. You can see inside the rooms and feel the history that surrounds you. A worthwhile stop if in the area.
