#19 of 36 in Museums in Santa Fe
The Museum of Spanish Colonial Art collects, preserves, and exhibits the Spanish colonial art of New Mexico and beyond, and educates the public about its related cultures and living traditions.

Since the 1600s, Spanish colonial arts and crafts have been an important part of village life in New Mexico and Southern Colorado; however, by the early 1900s, the practice of these traditional arts was declining. In 1925, the Spanish Colonial Arts Society was founded in Santa Fe to encourage and promote Spanish colonial arts and crafts and to inform and educate the public about traditional art forms.

Since then, the Spanish Colonial Arts Society has played a major role in developing markets for the artists, increasing public awareness, preserving Spanish colonial art, and emphasizing the importance of continuing community traditions.

  • This is a bit of a landmark in Santa Fe and definitively a must if you want to become familiar with what’s hot in terms of folk, Spanish and local art in the area. I’ve been here a few times and always enjoy the highly political art in display. It is a nice addition to the art scene here and it provides for a great non-threatening and casual gallery atmosphere.
  • Loved this museum! While it's a relatively small museum (we explored and took in the whole museum in about an hour) and it didn't contain an extensive collection of artifacts, the GenNext exhibit was amazing! As were all the other current pieces--filled with color, texture, depth and reason to pause. Would definitely recommend!
