The Tower of History (originally the Tower of Missionaries) is a 210-foot (64 m) observation tower in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Located at 326 E. Portage Avenue, it was the tallest observation tower in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan when completed in 1968. The tower was built in a modernist style and consists of three vertical, trapezoid-shaped columns that support five cantilevered observation platforms. It provides a panoramic, 360-degree view of the Soo Locks, the St. Mary's River, Lake Superior, and cities on both the American and Canadian sides of the border. The view extends for roughly 20 miles (32 km); in total, approximately 1,200 square miles (3,100 km2) are visible from the tower.

  • Great Views from multiple viewing decks. There are stairs and an elevator as well. An amazing gothic-style church is next door, with amazing architecture.

  • We loved the great views from the top of the Tower of history. There are both indoor and outdoor observation areas. The indoor area includes panoramic maps and descriptions of what you’re looking...

  • Bought the tickets at the Valley Camp Museum in a combo deal. Enjoyed both the museum and the tower. Spent about an hour and a half at the Valley Camp Museum it was way cool. The tower was great but it was the fellow behind the desk that was great. He was very helpful in finding a restaurant and giving tips on the balance of our trip.
  • Great views of the area with photos indicating the sights. Lots of good information with history. And take the elevator.
