The Tower of History (originally the Tower of Missionaries) is a 210-foot (64 m) observation tower in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Located at 326 E. Portage Avenue, it was the tallest observation tower in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan when completed in 1968. The tower was built in a modernist style and consists of three vertical, trapezoid-shaped columns that support five cantilevered observation platforms. It provides a panoramic, 360-degree view of the Soo Locks, the St. Mary's River, Lake Superior, and cities on both the American and Canadian sides of the border. The view extends for roughly 20 miles (32 km); in total, approximately 1,200 square miles (3,100 km2) are visible from the tower.

  • What an incredible and inexpensive place to visit! The views are amazing and the history is well read. And while your at it, after visiting the tower of history, you should visit Saint Mary's Church next door. Just beautiful!
  • I'm still questioning why this was built. I know what was written but it seems it was a monument to a priest. Anyway, the cost was $7.50 per adult. The views from the platforms were fantastic. You can see freighters approaching the locks from either direction. Once you visit this, I doubt you would go back again.
