If the stones of Bonaventure Cemetery could talk, they would narrate some of Savannah's most dramatic stories. Located on a scenic bluff overlooking the Wilmington River, the cemetery shot to fame in 1994 when it became a setting for a movie directed by Clint Eastwood. A quiet place of oaks, lawn sculptures, and dripping Spanish moss, the cemetery attracts visitors with its eerie feel, which inspired writer John Berendt to call it "the garden of good and evil." As you stroll through the cemetery, look for the graves of poet Conrad Aiken, actress Edythe Chapman, and songwriter Johnny Mercer. The cemetery is beautiful and the scenery is amazing. I only took off the one star because i was hoping for a recommendation of a trail or something rather than just walking around. If i had taken a tour im sure i would have had a much better experience. It is also very nice that you can drive around to avoid the heat.
This is an absolutely amazing Cemetery. Just taking the time to slowly drive through and look at the mausoleums, tombs, stones, and figures. It is definitely worth taking the trip four cultural as well as a historic perspective. Does Cemetery goes back a couple hundred years and the sheer beauty of the Headstones and surrounding Flora will mesmerize you.
