Mickve Israel Temple, Savannah

4.8
Consecrated in 1878, Mickve Israel Temple was built in an unusual Neo-Gothic style that echoes the elaborate architecture of the Victorian period--the only synagogue in the United States like it. Home to the third-oldest Jewish congregation in the United States, the temple and adjacent museum tell the tale of Judaism in the South. See the temple's Sefer Torah, a 15th-century Torah brought from London with the founding congregational members in 1733. Examine the letters written to the congregation by Presidents Washington, Jefferson, and Madison. Be aware that the synagogue may not be open during Jewish and federal holidays. • We arrived at about 1 in the afternoon, and decided to go on a tour, $8 per person, and 12 and under are free. The tour guide (volunteer) was very informative and answered all our questions, not only about the temple, but about Judaism as well. The sanctuary is a Neo-gothic sanctuary, the only one in America. The museum is not large, just one room, and contains some of the artifacts that the original settlers left. It also contains the 2 oldest Torahs that the temple has. All in all, it is a great place to visit in Savannah.
  • The country's third oldest congregation. Oldest Torah in North America. Very special crown jewel in Savannah
