The Higgins Beach Surf school was founded in 2012, and is run out of Hutch's house at Higgins Beach in Scarborough, ME. His colleagues, Bryan Cahn and Taylor Smolik, are seasoned surfers and instructors who work with Hutch to teach and promote surfing in Maine and the East coast.

Lessons include wetsuit and board rentals, wax, beachside parking, and informative teachers with years of surf instruction experience. Each session will have a land segment, where the instructor will give a thorough beach lesson to solidify fundamentals. After that, they'll paddle out and catch waves. To schedule your first lesson, contact the Higgins Beach Surf School at surfhiggins@gmail.com. For more information, visit our website at www.surfhiggins.com

In addition to teaching lessons, the Higgins Beach Surf School is dedicated to endorsing and spreading surf culture throughout the East Coast. Like East Coast skiing, East Coast surfing is often forgotten behind the shadow of the dominant West. It's time to break this trend and find pride in the East. After all, one of the world's best surfers, Kelly Slater, is East Coast born and raised. To get in touch with this cause, follow the Higgins Beach Surf School's Twitter and Instagram accounts, as well as the official website.

  • Parking is VERY limited, so get there early to claim your spot. At high tide, the sandy areas are limited. I went during a storm to capture photos of the surfers and the big waves. It was gorgeous.  more »
  • This is a nice sandy beach. If you go at low tide there is an old shipwreck you can walk around. I don't know where you would park. I walked down from the Higgins Beach Inn. It was nice to set a chair...  more »
